10 Essential Tips for Your First Cox’s Bazar Trip

Cox's Bazar Beach

Cox’s Bazar boasts the world’s longest natural sandy beach at 120 km, drawing millions of visitors each year. If you’re planning your first visit, a little preparation goes a long way toward making the experience unforgettable.

1. Best Time to Visit

The ideal window is November to February, when the weather is dry and temperatures hover around 20-28°C. Monsoon (June-September) brings dramatic skies but rough seas and frequent rain.

2. Book Accommodation Early

Peak-season hotels in Kolatoli and Sugandha point fill up fast. Reserve at least 30 days in advance for weekends. Sea-view rooms cost 30-50% more but the sunrise is worth it.

3. Try Local Seafood

  • Grilled rupchanda (pomfret) at Burmese Market
  • Lobster thermidor at Mermaid Cafe
  • Crab curry at Poushee Restaurant
  • Bhorta platters with hot rice at any local joint

4. Day Trips Worth Taking

Don’t miss Himchari Waterfall (20 min south), Inani Beach (35 km), and Saint Martin’s Island (reachable by ship from Teknaf, October-March only).

5. Stay Modest on the Beach

Bangladesh is culturally conservative. Modest swimwear is appreciated. Bikinis are uncommon — women typically swim in long t-shirts and pants or salwar kameez.

6. Beach Safety

Rip currents are real. Swim only in lifeguarded zones marked by flags. Avoid the water after sunset.

7. Beware of Beach Photographers

The roving photographers charge per print — agree on price before clicking. Your phone usually does a better job anyway.

8. Bargain at Burmese Market

Tribal handicrafts, dry fish, blankets, and exotic spices are sold here. Start at half the quoted price and meet in the middle.

9. Renting a Bike or Beach Buggy

Cycle rentals (BDT 200-400/day) let you explore at your own pace. Beach buggies are fun but supervised.

10. Currency & Connectivity

ATMs are everywhere on the main strip. Grameenphone and Robi both have strong 4G coverage. Cash is preferred at small eateries and rickshaws.

Pro tip: catch the sunrise at Laboni Beach — it’s the original gem of Cox’s Bazar and far less crowded than Kolatoli at 6 AM.
